For the 2024 model year, Mazda is unveiling several new SUVs, the largest of which will be the all-new Mazda CX-90. This midsize three-row crossover will have a spacious interior, a roomier back seat, and a more premium look, making it poised to be the new flagship of Mazda's crossovers. The new CX-90 will be the first Mazda model with a new turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine. Reston residents will find a 48-volt hybrid system amplifies this model. And according to Mazda, the CX-90 can produce 280 horsepower in non-S trims, and 340 hp in S trims.
A plug-in-hybrid variant will also be offered. The powertrain will utilize an inline four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kWh battery pack to produce 323 hp. It's the same setup the CX-60 SUV uses in the European market.
All models will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive as standard.
While the EPA has released no official numbers, the inline-six engine is rated for up to 24/28 miles per gallon. With that information in mind, the plug-in hybrid powertrain will likely be more efficient and come with at least 30 miles or so of electric driving.
To go along with its upscale exterior, McLean and Ashburn drivers will find Mazda has outfitted the CX-90 with a stylish cabin design that comfortably seats up to eight passengers. A set of second-row captain's chairs can be installed in the second row, dropping the capacity to seven.
While sparse, basic models are quite stylish and offer leather upholstery on the Preferred trim. In higher-end models, like the Premium Plus, the interior is even more striking with soft Napa leather.
Nestled into the dashboard and controlled via a click wheel is a 10.3- or larger 12.3-inch infotainment display that uses Mazda's latest infotainment interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both come standard, and a seven-inch digital gauge display and an eight-speaker sound system are also available. A larger 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is optional, as is a 12-speaker Bose stereo.
According to Mazda, all CX-90 models will come with a suite of advanced driver-assist features called i-Activsense. While little is known about this new system, we do know that this feature will include automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control as standard equipment.
Anyone Fairfax customer who purchases the new Mazda CX-90 will be given an adequate protection plan. This plan will have a Limited warranty which covers three years or 36,000 miles, and a Powertrain warranty which covers five years or 60,000 miles. What this plan won't offer, however, is complimentary scheduled maintenance.
Officially, no price has been given to the new Mazda CX-90, given its more premium positioning though we suspect this SUV will start around the $40,000 range and max out near $50,000 or so. We feel this SUV will be hard to ignore, with a fairly reasonable price, strong engine options, and plenty of high-end features.
Mazda is positioning the new CX-90 as an affordable semi-luxury vehicle, and we feel many will love this SUV when it arrives later this year.
